Notes

#1  Mary Stuart was married to Prince William III of Orange, sovereign of territories in the Dutch Republic, including Holland. Mary's stepmother, Mary Modena, referred to Mary as "my dear Lemon" in correspondence in the 1670s and 1680s. The current Princess of Cambridge is Kate Middleton; Princess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.
Mary Stuart was never an English princess.

#2  Mary died of smallpox in December 1694. She was Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland for 5 1/2 years. Her paternal great-great-grandmother and namesake, Mary Stuart of Scotland (aka Mary, Queen of Scots), was beheaded in 1587 on the order of Queen Elizabeth I. She was 44 years old. Mary's paternal grandfather, Charles I, was beheaded in 1649 by forces loyal to Oliver Cromwell. He was 48. Mary's half-brother (her father's son by Mary Modena), James Francis Edward Stuart, the Prince of Wales and a claimant to the English throne (eventually known as "The Old Pretender"), died in 1766 at age 77.
